Revit is a building information modeling (BIM) software developed by Autodesk for engineers, contractors, and architects. It allows:
• To access information from BIM database.
• To design a building and its components in three dimensions.
• To understand the models with 2D Revit MEP Drafting elements.
• To track the building lifecycle using 4D models from concept to completion.
It supports features for structural, architectural and MEP engineering.
Recently, Autodesk has updated Revit software for MEP Fabrication and drafting. Let’s deep dive into the new features of Revit 2018 for MEP:
Sloped piping for fabrication:
Revit has been updated by Autodesk for sloped piping with respect to its part. One can now use multi-point routing for fabrication elements. They can also apply slopes to already modeled elements. The updated version allows you to:
• Apply slope to pipe elements part-by-part
• Apply slope to branch elements
• Apply different slopes to T and Y conditions.
Moreover, elements that require being horizontal remain horizontal, they are not affected by the slopes. Also, it is now possible to modify slopes as and when required. A predefined set of slopes are available so that you don’t have to apply a new slope every time.
Multi-point Routing:
Revit now enables the designers to model MEP fabrication elements with multi-point routing. This feature enables designers and engineers to do a number of things like:
• They can change the size, shape, elevation, and type of fittings as they route the elements.
• They can tap into different elements and use remote snapping for making connections.
• They can use fabrication controls for optimization and hence improve the layout.
• The multi-point routing takes care of a couple of things like fitting and priority settings, conditions, and other functionalities like connectivity rules. It works well for ducts, pipes, and electrical containment elements.
Outdoor Air Enhancements:
Revit MEP for BIM Engineering now offers better estimates for outdoor air computation. It also provides flexibility for space types. This means designers will be able to create unique space types. Originally, the ventilation loads were stored in such a way that it wouldn’t allow for energy analysis. But in Revit 2018, it is now possible to fetch this information through a new workflow. Hence, energy analysis can be done by the engineers.
Circuit Path:
Initially, there was no feature to route the circuit pathway. Hence, it was not possible to calculate short-circuit current. This affected the electrical analysis up to much a greater extent. With the advancement in Revit MEP Services, one can simply add a point for routing the circuit path.
Analytical connections for pressure drop-flow:
Early analysis of pressure drop/flow is now enabled in 3D Revit BIM Modeling. This accounts for analytical connections between the pipes and other equipment. Thus, designers can have a complete analytical model during early stages of designing.
